smokin' voiceover guy
Ed Cowden is one of the most professional, insightful and versatile Voice Artists to rise out of Los Angeles since 2006. Heartfelt, edgy, wisdom beyond years, dark, mysterious and in-your-face high energy are just some of his trademarks.
As a vocalist and Meisner trained actor for nearly 20 years, Ed "gets it". Producers, directors and engineers alike remark on his preparation, his willingness to deliver beyond a client's needs, and his absolute joy in doing so.
After earning B.A. degrees with honors in History and Philosopy from Boston University, Ed attended Temple University School of Law for two years before returning to singing on stage at America's oldest theatre, the prestigious Walnut Street Theatre in Philadelphia, PA. He then found his way to Los Angeles, where he appeared in commercials, hosted Microsoft's E3 booth, and performed live stand-up comedy at The Comedy Store, Room 5, the Ha-Ha Club and other venues.
While improv training at The Groundlings, Ed was asked if he did voiceovers. Though Ed was a strong bass-baritone vocalist, and had even been accepted into the Tanglewood Institute, he had never even considered voiceover...
That one question set the wheels in motion, and Ed soon found himself training with MJ Lallo, then seeking out Scott Holst (Commercial), Steve Staley (Animation) and Kathy Grable (Commercial) at Kalmenson & Kalmenson, before contacting Huck Liggett at the legendary Voicecaster. He was soon in touch with Joyce Castellanos to learn Promos and Trailers, and then tracked down Bob Bergen (the voice of Porky Pig) for addition animation training. He has also had the privilege of engineering and participating in Narration studies with Nick Omana and JV Martin, and works closely with Gary Giambo and Martha Mayakis of TalkShop.
The love of the craft and dedication have paid off: so far in 2009, Ed has voiced the full campaign for Hunter Douglas, is the voice of Sheetz, the male voice of Senior Living Resources, and the promo announcer for Big Man. Ed has also been tapped by advertising agency Gunn Jerkens as the voice of high-end property home builders, O'Brien Homes.
